Yr 5 Bikeability

BIKEABILITY – LEVEL 2 (Including Level 1) ROAD CYCLE TRAINING Bikeability Training has previously been provided by Cycle4Life at Grove Road, but this year we have managed to access The Department for Transport funding through Hertfordshire’s Bikeability Trust and therefore have reduced the cost considerably for parents for this training. We are pleased to offer your child a place on this Bikeability road cycling training course, run by the Bikeability Trust. The cost of this course has been subsidised by The Department of Transport Funding, and is also being part-funded by FOG, reducing the cost to £10.50 per child. The skills that the children learn will last a lifetime and include not just riding ability but also self-reliance, decision-making and how to keep fit and healthy. The course is run by qualified Bikeability DBS checked trainers and will be held in school hours between Monday 22nd April and Friday 26 th April 2024. Sessions are run in small groups and are very interactive and enjoyable and each child is able to achieve their own best level. Your child should already be able to ride and control their bike. Bikeabilty Level 1 takes place on the playground and fun games and activities are used to teach basic bike skills such as looking behind and signalling. The children then progress to Bikeability Level 2, following a planned route around roads near the school. Here they will watch, discuss, then practice a variety of cycling manoeuvers using different road situations. All sessions must be attended to gain Level 2, as the skills build up gradually. Your child will need a correctly-sized well-maintained bike, preferably with gears, bike helmet and suitable clothing for riding a bike (trousers for all pupils) and are required to bring their bike in daily. Please check your child’s bike against the roadworthiness checklist before the course, using the link below. Should your child not have a suitable bicycle and you would like them to participate, please can you let us know? Consent & payment is required on school gateway www.schoolgateway.com no later than Friday 22nd March.
