Personal Development

Grove Road’s Personal Development Programme

Personal Development is at the heart of our school learning journey. At Grove Road, we recognise that the primary years are a key time for children to develop their own identity and aspirations for the future. As well as academic development, it is essential that children are given opportunities through the curriculum and beyond, for personal development. We understand the crucial role we can play in helping children to prepare for their adult lives so they can go on to positively engage in society. The opportunities we can offer them while at Grove Road will impact upon their future, helping them to develop the core values we hold at the school. Our core values help pupils develop their character, to know that individual differences should be valued, to be resilient, ambitious, curious and have respect for one another. Our Personal Development Programme at Grove Road embodies:

Our balanced and broad-based Personal Development curriculum will promote the spiritual, moral, cultural, mental and physical development of pupils and prepare them for the opportunities and responsibilities for later life. Our curriculum is designed to equip pupils with the knowledge, skills, capabilities and resilience which they need for mental, emotional, social and physical wellbeing now and in the future. The Personal Development curriculum supports pupils to be ready for their next stage in education.

Personal Development Intent Statement

The intent of our Personal Development curriculum is to deliver a holistic which pervades through everyday life, as well as a curriculum which is accessible to all. We endeavour to maximise the outcomes for every child so that they know more, remember more and understand more over time. At Grove Road Primary, Personal Development education is inclusive and enables all our pupils to become healthy, independent and responsible members of a society. It aims to help the pupils understand how they are developing personally and socially and tackles many of the moral, social and cultural issues that are part of growing up. We provide our children with opportunities for them to learn about British Values and appreciate what it means to be a member of a diverse society. Our pupils are encouraged to develop their sense of self-worth by playing a positive role in contributing to school life and the wider community.

At Grove Road Primary School, we seek to use Personal Development education to build, where appropriate, on the basic school curriculum and the statutory guidance on: drug education, sex and relationship education and the importance of physical activity and diet for a healthy lifestyle. Our curriculum also incorporates religious beliefs, values and identity allowing all our pupils to develop into well-rounded members of the community who make a difference to the world we live in.
